Lim Sung-jae Poised for Success at US Open Golf 2024

Lim Sung-jae is one of the most eagerly awaited Korean players at the US Open Golf 2024, the third major tournament of the season. Recently, he scored an impressive 714.75 points across five competitions, including a joint eighth place at the Memorial Tournament. This year, he has finished in the top 10 four times, positioning him at 15th in the FedEx Cup rankings.

Reviving Form for the US Open Golf

Lim Sung-jae is ready to lead at the US Open Golf, held at Pinehurst Resort & Country Club’s second course in North Carolina from June 14th. Reflecting on his season, Lim noted, “My performance struggled at the start due to issues with shots and putts, but I’ve improved significantly since last month. My current form is similar to my peak periods.” He is determined to maintain this positive momentum in major competitions.

Aiming for Top Performance in Majors

Lim Sung-jae has excelled in special tournaments with higher FedEx Cup points and prize money, such as The Sentry, the Wells Fargo Championship, and the Memorial Tournament. However, he has yet to make the cut in this season’s major tournaments. “I did well in special competitions but missed the cut in majors. This time, I aim to pass the cut on weekdays and improve my ranking over the weekend. I want to perform in the US Open Golf as I did in special tournaments,” he emphasized.

Focus on the Greens at Pinehurst

During practice rounds, Lim Sung-jae paid special attention to the greens at Pinehurst. “The greens here are more challenging than they appear. If your iron shot is slightly off, the ball can roll off the green, increasing the likelihood of three-putts. Leaving an uphill putt is crucial,” he explained. He stressed the importance of concentration even on short putts within one meter.

Strategic Play on a Tough Course

Lim Sung-jae highlighted the necessity of a strategic approach at Pinehurst Resort & Country Club. “None of the 18 holes are easy birdie opportunities. Securing par on all holes is a significant achievement. Avoiding mistakes is key,” he said. He noted that his preference for challenging courses over birdie-rich ones aligns well with Pinehurst’s layout.

Strengths in Driver and Iron Shots

Lim Sung-jae attributes his strength on difficult courses to his precise driver and iron shots. “I am very confident in hitting the fairway. My long iron shots are among the best on the PGA Tour,” he said. After refining his takeaway and backswing, he expects to hit the ball more accurately. “Pinehurst is demanding, but I will remain calm and focus on precise shots,” he added.

Goals for the Season

Lim Sung-jae aims to qualify for the Tour Championship for the sixth consecutive season by finishing in the top 30 of the FedEx Cup rankings. “My performance was poor until April, but recent improvements have changed the outlook. By performing well at the US Open Golf and the Travelers Championship, I hope to secure a spot in the Tour Championship,” he stated. He plans to consistently accumulate FedEx Cup points to achieve this goal.
